How good is aviva travel insurance?

We analyse and rate 61 key elements of travel insurance policies to come up with the overall policy score. We assess how important each individual element is to travellers when choosing and using a travel insurance policy, and factor this in when calculating our total policy score.

Initially, we score all of the product elements out of five, reflecting how competitive each provider is in this area compared with other insurers. We then adjust the impact the more and less important elements have on the overall policy score.

These are questions I’ve been getting more often due to the recent pandemic and I will take some time in this video to answer those questions about travel insurance. The reason to buy travel insurance can be simply put: Travel Insurance minimizes the financial risks associated with travel. nnDoes it make sense for you?nFor some people it makes financial sense. Others it doesn’t.nHow willing are you to take risks? How much if peace of mind worth for you?nIf your potential loss is a few hundred dollars in airfare, travel insurance is probably not worth the cost or aggravation. On the other hand, a once-in-a-lifetime $20,000 vacation is worth protecting.nnTypes of Travel Insurance:nTrip cancellation: Refund if you cancel due to a covered reason. CORONAVIRUS TYPICALLY ISN’T ONE.nTrip interruption: Refund for the rest of your trip if you have to return homenTrip delay: Refund for expenses due to a delay. Usually has to be 6 to 12 hours.nMedical: Emergency medical expenses on the trip. Should you buy aviva travel insurance?

Aviva offers one main policy, though many of its features are optional – meaning you can choose to add them to the policy or enhance cover within it for an extra premium.

The policy scored a respectable 71% in our analysis – in the top quarter of policies we reviewed (the average score was 63%).

Optional FCDO advice cover

One of the more pivotal add-ons you can purchase with Aviva’s policy is the ‘Travel Disruption Cover’ module.

This allows you to make a cancellation claim if your trip is disrupted by strike action, a natural disaster, or the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) changing its advice to recommend not travelling to your destination for any but ‘essential’ reasons.

Importantly, unlike some policies, you’re not covered if you choose to travel against FCDO advice.

With ‘Travel Disruption Cover’ added, Aviva’s policy is one of nine (out of 199 assessed) that we’ve awarded a ‘Complete’ rating to when it comes to its Covid cover (it otherwise has a ‘Superior’ rating).
